The Plasma Sterilization program is investigating
the ability of a plasma, or partially ionized
gas, to kill pathogenic bacteria on the surface
of the skin, thereby leading to improved wound
healing outcomes and reduction of secondary infections.
Preliminary research has indicated that a non-thermal,
atmospheric pressure plasma can drastically reduce
the population of a wide range of pathogenic
bacteria placed on skin surrogates in controlled
experiments. By investigating how these results
translate to living skin, the program will build
the foundation for a novel medical technology. |
