Hardwire® DARPA Armor

Program Manager: Dr. Leo Christodoulou

In collaboration with the U.S. Army, the Hardwire® DARPA Armor Program is exploiting a unique high strength steel/polymer composite hybrid configuration to provide improved military vehicle armor protection at a significantly reduced weight compared to other technologies, and at a cost comparable to that of traditional armor.  This approach to armor and manufacturing will change armor production from a labor-intensive small-quantity process to a precise, high-throughput operation.  The program aims to apply automotive-based production fabrication technologies to adaptively and rapidly produce panels to specification.  This change in the composite armor design and production paradigm is necessary to supply armor to address specific and emerging threats on demand.
