Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Workshop (2000)

Program Manager: Dr. David Honey

On April 18-19, 2000, DARPA/MTO held the WDM for Military Platforms Workshop in McLean, VA. The purpose of this workshop was to explore new opportunities for the development of innovative chip-scale WDM technologies for use onboard military platforms. Speakers were invited from DoD, academia and industry.

WDM has provided a substantial benefit to long-haul telecommunications, and its deployment in this particular market is well underway. However, the shorter transmission distances that characterize the data networks of military platforms may limit the insertion opportunities of long-haul COTS WDM equipment. Also, the desire to carry analog and digital data simultaneously on the same fiber may prove to be a substantial obstacle. These topics and others were highlighted in the workshop, and many novel approaches to chip-scale WDM components were presented. I wish to thank all of the participants for their efforts in helping to provide DARPA a number of very important insights.
