Electro-Magnetic Pulse Tolerant Microwave Receiver Front-End (EMPiRe)

Program Manager: Dr. Ronald Esman

The Electro-Magnetic Pulse Tolerant Microwave Receiver Front End (EMPiRe) program will develop a novel, robust, and sensitive microwave receiver front-end capable of surviving and operating in high energy electromagnetic environments while maintaining high sensitivity, bandwidth, and dynamic range. The technology developed within this program will be scalable to operate within the 0.5-18 GHz frequency band, over as large a fractional bandwidth as feasible, and provide protection against both in-band and out-of-band high energy pulses.

The Department of Defense (DoD) employs a wide range of radar, communication, and electronic warfare systems which utilize microwave receivers in their operation. Current microwave receivers are particularly vulnerable, even when outfitted with state-of-the-art protection, to high energy pulses and signals. The EMPiRe program will focus on developing front-end technologies and approaches to protect microwave receivers. Ultimately, it is envisioned that the technology developed within the EMPiRe program will provide protection in high energy electromagnetic environments, without system performance degradation, helping to ensure the effectiveness of future military missions.
