Recognize IED and Report (RIEDAR)
Program Manager: Dr. Devanand Shenoy
The goal of the RIEDAR program is to develop a revolutionary approach to detect hazardous materials from a large distance in sub-second time scales using laser-based optical techniques. To achieve this goal, RIEDAR will demonstrate a novel, compact, high-power UV-tunable nanosecond and NIR femto-second pulsed lasers. Specifically, the program will develop a comprehensive model of an unstable oscillator and laser amplifiers/frequency converters to optimize optical efficiency and provide excellent beam characteristics. These lasers will have broad impact in environments where high-power, compact, tunable lasers can enable new applications for robust and rapid detection of chemical signatures. The program also seeks to demonstrate laser operation at high power while maintaining frequency stability and to develop a robust compact system capable of continuous operation in standard rugged military environments in a package less than 1m3 in size.
