Advanced Portal Security (APS)

Critical gaps exist in our military capability to detect and identify chemical and biological agents concealed in packages that are delivered to military facilities before they become a proximate threat. The Advanced Portal Security (APS) system will provide 1) a rapid mail search capability to detect and identify CB agents inside envelopes, 2) a rapid single container search capability to detect and identify CB agents inside bottles and other small containers, 3) a rapid package search capability to detect and identify concealed containers of CB agents, and 4) a rapid capability for detecting small containers of CB agents on people. The focus is on detecting CB agents in sealed containers and will augment the physical perimeter established to control entry to a facility with CB sensor capabilities to interrogate for CB agents. The research program transitions to DTRA in early FY06.
