Chemical, Biological and Radiological Defense

Worldwide accessibility of the knowledge and capabilities required to develop and manufacture Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), in conjunction with their potential use by nation states and/or terrorist organizations, necessitates improvements to U.S. defenses. Important capabilities includes protection of personnel and facilities by ensuring the prompt and rapid detection, identification, neutralization and/or decontamination of chemical, biological, or nuclear threat materials, whether gaseous, particulate, fluid or solid and irrespective of their delivery method. STO is developing new sensor and signal processing technologies and related devices to effectively provide these functional improvements for use in support systems to protect military personnel in both buildings and the battlefield. Additionally, STO is developing new technologies and design techniques for building construction and related infrastructure that will intrinsically protect personnel from exposure to these hazardous materials.
