Threat Agent Cloud Tactical Intercept & Countermeasure (TACTIC)

Program Manager: Dr. Karen Wood

Many existing and prospective adversaries of the US, and its allies, are suspected to have access to chemical and biological warfare agent weapons (CWA/BWA). The specific concern addressed here is the battlefield threat of chemical/biological aerosol/vapor clouds released during military operations. Such a release can contaminate the battlespace with deadly amounts of agent, resulting in numerous casualties and disruption of mission tempo. The threat of such an attack places a large logistics burden on today's highly mobile forces to carry the proper protective gear and sufficient quantities of decontamination supplies.

The purpose of the Threat Agent Cloud Tactical Intercept and Countermeasure (TACTIC) Program is to provide the United States (US) military with the capability to protect the warfighter from CWA/BWA threat clouds on the battlefield. The goal of the program is to provide a system that can rapidly detect and identify the presence of a typical threat cloud and provide a countermeasure to that cloud that will kill it before it reaches the intended target.

Successful development of this system will culminate with a demonstration of a revolutionary capability that will enable a paradigm shift from passive protection to an active countermeasure, effectively eliminating CWA/BWA from the arsenals of enemy forces.
