Mr. Andy Coon

Mr. Andy Coon joined DARPA STO as a program manager in February of 2008. His initial focus will be supporting Maritime Operations programs.

Prior to serving at DARPA, Mr. Coon was employed with BBN for 8 years where he led several advanced research programs for the Navy and DARPA. He oversaw staff, programs, and business development within the Distributed Sensing Solutions business team (Rosslyn office) at BBN. He oversaw the transition of the Distant Thunder active sonar program where he supported advanced development for ship and aircraft systems that evolved over several sea tests. He led research for a number of ONR active sonar programs. He supported Navy studies for distributed ocean-sensor communications, and he supported the DARPA Center of Excellence for Research in Ocean Sciences (CEROS) in the development of expendable lighter-than-air relay nodes. Mr. Coon also worked in BBN's Distributed Sensing Solutions Group. He oversaw staff for the Modeling and Signal Processing group and lead business development for the Maritime Surveillance thrust area. While serving in these leadership roles, he continued to act as Principal Investigator and Program Manager for a variety of advanced development programs and studies.

Prior to working at BBN, Mr. Coon was employed for 13 years at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, in the Submarine Technology Department. His projects spanned exploratory development to operational support primarily associated with sonar signal and information processing but with excursions in simulation, training, and airborne acoustic detection systems. His early work focused on air-deployed multistatic systems beginning with the NAVAIR Extended Echo Ranging (EER) system.

Mr. Coon received a BSEE from the University of Maryland in 1987, and an MSEE from The Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering in 1992.
